Beautifully Broken: Showtime
Ren Tanaka is back at the Maple Street studio, but a big art show and a younger kid who chases perfect just like the old Ren put everything to the test. Can Ren keep choosing beautiful-broken when the stakes are real?
Ren Tanaka still liked things tidy. Pencils by size. Shoes by the door, toes pointing the same way. But these days, Ren also kept a wonky golden pot on the windowsill, the one with cracks mended in shimmering gold, and Ren loved it more than anything smooth.
A whole year had passed at the little pottery studio on Maple Street. The brass bell on the door still gave its friendly jingle. Ms. Okafor still had clay smeared on her cheek like war paint. And Ren, once so scared of a single smudge, could now spin a lump of clay into a bowl without panicking when it wobbled.
So when Ms. Okafor clapped her hands one Saturday and said she had big news, Ren leaned in, curious instead of cold-bellied. 'There is a city art show next month,' she announced. 'The Riverside Youth Exhibition. They have invited our studio to send pieces.'
Felix whooped. Bea bounced. Ren felt a small electric thrill. A real show, with real judges and ribbons. 'Are we all going to make something for it?' Ren asked. Ms. Okafor smiled. 'If you are brave enough.'
