It's been exactly one year since you and your park ranger dad found a dragon egg on Blackrock Mountain. The tiny hatchling you named Ember has grown into a young dragon the size of a horse, with shimmering copper scales and wings that span ten feet. Every morning before school, and every evening at dusk, you sneak into the Whispering Woods to visit her.

'One year,' you murmur to yourself, pulling on your boots. 'One year of the best secret anyone's ever kept.'

Your dad knows, of course. He worries, but he's seen the bond between you and Ember — how she purrs when you scratch behind her horns, how she lights your campfire with a gentle puff of flame. 'Just be careful out there,' he says from the kitchen, the same thing he says every evening. 'And be back by ten.'

Marcus, your family friend who helped protect Ember last year, checks in every few weeks with supplies and news. 'Keep her hidden,' he always says, his voice dropping low even when there's no one around to hear. 'The world isn't ready for dragons.'
