Three months had passed since Sam Delgado's wild night in the Millbrook Town Library, and life had mostly gone back to normal. Mostly. Sam still visited the library every single day after school, still devoured books faster than anyone else at Millbrook Elementary, and still earned the affectionate nickname 'the bookworm' from Mrs. Huang, the head librarian.

'You'll wear out that library card before you turn twelve,' Mrs. Huang always teased.

'That's the plan,' Sam would grin back.

But Sam carried a secret that nobody would ever believe. Behind the familiar shelves and quiet reading nooks, the books were alive. 'If I ever tried to explain this to my parents,' Sam often thought, 'they'd book me a therapist by Monday.'

Their characters could step right out of the pages, and a grumpy, leather-bound volume named Reginald had become Sam's closest confidant. Every Tuesday and Thursday, when Mrs. Huang left early, Sam would slip into the back stacks and chat with Reginald about everything from homework to the weather. 'It's like having a second family,' Sam sometimes told Reginald. 'Except mine lives in a thousand different books.'
