Escape from Ember Peak
Twelve-year-old Sadie wakes up to smoke on a family camping trip. With a wildfire spreading fast and her parents missing on a morning hike, she must lead her younger brother Mateo to safety using survival skills their park ranger uncle taught them.
Sadie loved camping at Ember Peak more than anywhere else in the world. The mountain air smelled like pine needles and campfire marshmallows, and at night you could see a million stars. She was curled up in her sleeping bag next to her eight-year-old brother Mateo, who was snoring like a tiny bear.
'How does someone that small make that much noise?' Sadie thought, smiling to herself.
Their parents had left a note on the cooler saying they went for an early morning hike to see the sunrise from Lookout Ridge. Sadie stretched and yawned. 'Sunrise hike. Without me. Rude.' But she was not really upset. A lazy morning sounded perfect.
