Freeze Frame: Borrowed Time

Lina's time-freezing watch comes back to life when a second device falls into the wrong hands, and every frozen second now costs the world something real.

It had been three whole months since Lina last froze time. The matte black smartwatch sat in her desk drawer, its blue ring dark and quiet, like a sleeping animal she was almost afraid to wake. She had promised herself she would only use it when it truly mattered, and lately, nothing had.

Then one Saturday morning the watch buzzed all on its own. Lina stared at it. The blue ring flickered to life, and a single line of text crawled across the screen: QT-60 UNIT TWO ACTIVATED. PROXIMITY DETECTED.

'Unit two?' she whispered, lifting the watch out of the drawer. 'There's another one?' The QuantumTech contest had only ever mentioned one prototype. But the watch was sure, pulsing with a nervous little hum she had never felt from it before. Something had changed, and it was close.
